Total War: Attila is a large-scale strategy that combines turn-based empire management with real-time battles.
The action begins in the year 395, more than eighty years before the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire and the beginning of the Middle Ages, thus allowing to play a truly fascinating and rarely used period in history. The campaign focuses on a relatively short period, at least as per the series standards, but it implements it in much more detail. Among the playable factions were the greatest powers of that period, from both parts of the failing Roman Empire, through the young kingdoms of the Franks and Saxons and numerous tribes of itinerant barbarians.
Just like the previous editions of the series, Total War: Attila is a mix of RTS. In real time, we play gigantic battles in which thousands of soldiers can participate. In turn, there is a strategic layer that requires us to take care of the economic, military and technological development of our subjects and for diplomatic relations. At the same time, the authors introduced many new solutions that would fully reflect the military, social and religious turmoil of those times. Fans will be especially pleased with the return of the family tree, which was missing in Rome II, thanks to which we get the opportunity to sow intrigue, appoint officials, manage families and relations between specific citizens. In addition, pestilence has become a lethal threat, and if we do not keep cities clean, their populations can quickly fall victim to various plagues. Diseases can also bring hostile armies to civilization centers during clashes and sieges. The game in a realistic way also reflects the religious situation, and even weather, forcing the players to station armies in cities and camps during winter, or to prepare stocks taking into account the climate changes that occurred in Europe at that time. The general cooling caused worse yields and resulted in regular famine.
